Garden paths and steps in Middlesbrough

A good path takes you where you actually walk: back door to patio, patio to shed, side gate to bins. Add steps where the garden changes level and the whole space becomes easier and safer to use.

Garden paths

Paths get more use than almost any other part of the garden, often in the dark and the wet. Worth getting right:

  • Width. Wide enough to walk comfortably and to push a wheelbarrow or wheel a bin along. A path that is too narrow ends up with a worn strip of lawn beside it.
  • The route. Follow the way people really walk, or they will cut the corner across the grass.
  • Material. Porcelain, Indian sandstone, concrete slabs, resin-bound or stepping stones set into lawn or gravel. Matching the path to the patio ties the garden together.
  • Edges and drainage. Proper edging stops the path spreading, and a slight cross-fall stops water sitting on it.
  • Lighting. If you want low-level lights, plan the cable runs before the path goes down.

Paths are built the same way as a patio: dug out, a compacted sub-base, and slabs bedded on mortar, or a resin-bound layer on a sound base.

Front garden paths

Paving over a front garden can need planning permission if it covers more than five square metres and the water runs onto the road or pavement. A porous surface such as resin-bound, or letting rainwater drain onto a lawn or border, normally keeps you within the rules. A path to the front door rarely runs into this, but it is worth knowing.

Garden steps

Many gardens around Middlesbrough slope, from the hillier streets in Nunthorpe and Marton to back gardens that rise away from the house. Steps make a slope usable, and they need to be safe in all weathers:

  1. Even risers. Every step the same height, so nobody trips on the odd one out.
  2. Deep enough treads to put a whole foot on comfortably.
  3. A solid footing under the bottom step and a firm build behind each riser.
  4. Grip. Textured slabs or a nosing on the front edge, especially in shade where steps go green.
  5. Drainage, so water runs off each tread rather than pooling.

Steps are often paired with low walls either side to hold the soil back, or with a raised patio that needs a way down to the lawn.

Questions people ask

What is the best material for a garden path?

It depends on the look and the budget. Slabs and porcelain match a patio. Resin-bound gives a smooth, joint-free finish that suits curves. Stepping stones are a cheaper, informal option through lawn or gravel.

Can a path be laid on top of grass?

Not if you want it to last. The turf and topsoil need to come out so there is room for a compacted base. Stepping stones set into lawn are the exception.

Do garden steps need planning permission?

Ordinary garden steps do not. If the steps lead up to a raised patio or platform more than 30cm above the ground, that platform may need planning permission.

How much do garden paths and steps cost?

It depends on the length, the material, the slope and how many steps you need. See what affects the price or ask for a free quote.
